Today is a great day for smartphone-owning graphic designers: Adobe has announced Photoshop Touch for iPhone and Android.
Those with an active interest in Photoshop will know that Adobe’s Touch app has been around for tablets since last year; however, until now the powerful features of the app have been kept away from smartphones. With this release, owners of Android handsets running 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher, and iOS users with an iPhone 5, 4S, or 5th generation iPod Touch can get layering until their heart’s content.
The new app brings virtually all the features of the tablet app to smartphones, and as Adobe project manager Stephen Neilson told TechRadar, this release has been in the planning since the original app was launched for iPad. “We wanted to make the app more accessible and available for situations where you don’t have a tablet available,” said Neilson. “We wanted to bring the same core features of Photoshop to millions of pockets worldwide.”
Being almost identical to its big brother means Photoshop Touch for smartphone users can enjoy full layer editing on images up to 12 megapixels, tone and color adjustments and filters. Images can be taken directly from your phone’s image gallery or redacted from the Adobe Creative Cloud – of which users will receive a healthy 2GB of storage to sync images to.
Also included is a Scribble Select feature that allows for high precision selections and cropping using only a finger and Camera Fill for real time blending of mobile camera snaps with Photoshop Touch layers.
Adobe has really pushed the boat out to make sure this app is smartphone accessible, with all toolbars placed around the perimeter for easy thumb swiping. Smartphone users’ needs to share everything with everyone have also been addressed with creations able to be quickly posted to Facebook and Twitter.
Adobe Photoshop Touch is available now in the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store for the excellent price of $4.99. If you are a photographer or graphic designer, this app is definitely worthwhile, providing some powerful editing tools. In fact, even if you are none of those things, at this price Photoshop Touch is still worthy of 20-30MB of your phone’s memory for what it can do!
