Apple is fast approaching 50 billion downloads in its App Store, and is going all out to celebrate it. According to ABC News, one extremely lucky downloader that happens to download the 50 billionth app will be given $10,000. The extremely generous prize will not be in cash, though; instead, it will be awarded in the form of an App Store gift card – which will purchase a hell of a lot of extra lives and boosts in Candy Crush Saga.
Of course, the odds of being the 50 billionth downloader are about the same as winning the lotto; but the guys at Apple are a generous bunch and are throwing in some $500 App Store gift cards to the 50 app downloaders after the 50 billion.
The prizes on offer are a reward for the loyalty of Apple customers, but the celebration is also a clever way to get people downloading various apps in an effort to earn the moniker of ‘50 billionth downloader.’ There are, however, entry restrictions: only 25 registrations each day will be counted and only users aged 13 and over are eligible to take part.
Coinciding with the somewhat over-the-top milestone celebration, Apple has also put out updated lists of the top iPhone and iPad apps of all time. Broken down into individual lists of free and paid-for apps on iPhone and iPad, the list features no surprises as to the names appearing at the top.
Angry Birds is the all-time top paid app on iPhone, but the HD edition of the game is beaten into second place on iPad by the word processing app, Pages. As for the free applications, Facebook rules the roost on iPhone, while Skype tops the iPad list.
