A recent acquisition by Apple may lead to further discussions about their total intent with regards to global positioning services, or GPS navigation.
Coherent Navigation is the latest company to be bought by Apple that deals with location technology and services.
Their expertise comes from working partnerships with companies like Boeing and the satellite linking firm Iridium, as well as projects done with the Defense Department.
Coherent Navigation has also worked on projects involving advanced robotics in an autonomous fashion.
Their acquisition comes as the latest in a string of similar purchases by Apple including popular location-app HopStop.
The purchase also signals a more aggressive move to establish their own, more precise GPS mapping system not unlike Google Maps, which they stopped using on all devices in 2012.
It’s also a move made with a possible eye towards the buzzing rumor that Apple is in the works to produce their own autonomous self-driving car in the next few years.
A far more substantial prognosis involves Uber. The on-demand car service has also made forays into acquiring global positioning system navigation companies, and recently opened an institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for autonomous car research.
