When it comes to social check-in services, Foursquare is the godfather. Having contributed more than any other app to the trend of checking-in, and boasting more than 40 million users, Foursquare is keeping itself relevant with a brand new update for iOS 7.
When iOS 7 launched back in September, Foursquare moved quickly to release an app that complemented the new Apple OS; today the company has unveiled a brand new overhauled design.
Foursquare version 7.0 claims to be faster, smarter and better looking than ever before and brings a number of excellent new features to help it achieve this, the most important of which is the rollout of push alerts.
Push alerts, a feature that originally surfaced on android, works by analyzing your location and suggesting restaurants and attractions in the local vicinity. If the app determines that you are in a specific location, it will go a step further and highlight the best activities or recommended meals. The great thing about this feature is that it will automatically push notifications even without the need to launch the app.
According to Cult of Mac, Foursquare also brings a major redesign to the check-in feed, with a timeline now in place to replace the old map look. The map has not gone completely though, and can be accessed with a swipe of the screen.
Another good feature in version 7.0 happens when the app is launched. On start-up, Foursquare will “shuffle the deck” to show tips and specials in the area and detail what your friends are up to. The developers have also been working hard to improve juice and make sure battery usage is kept to a minimum, and it seems to have paid off in this app.
The revamped version of Foursquare is available to download for free from the iTunes App Store.
