New Year’s Day being an official holiday meant that unlike other top-tier Twitter account hack-ins, Skype’s Twitter compromise by the Syrian Electronic Army/SEA was not quelled quickly. In the two hours it took to rectify, fake tweets were ripe and one was repeated 8000 times.
A sample of the bogus tweets urging the 3 million users engaged in Skype: “Don’t use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook), they are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to governments. More details soon #SEA.”
Other successful targets of the SEA were Skype’s Facebook page and website. They were of an account phishing nature, and have also been reportedly rectified.
