Nokia has confirmed that the roll out of its highly anticipated Amber update for Windows Phone 8 has begun.
The Amber update was originally announced back in May when Nokia launched its Lumia 925 handset and scheduled then for a July roll out. As we now know, that didn’t happen, but it’s here now and that’s what matters. The update is built on top of the most recent Microsoft Windows Phone 8 update and brings with it a number of new features designed to make the Lumias’ better and more appealing.
The Nokia Lumia 521, Lumia 810, and Lumia 928 will get the update initially in the U.S., as well as the Lumia 820 and 920 handsets abroad. The company also confirmed that the 520, 620, and 720 Lumias would be part of the roll out. Exactly when users will receive the update will vary depending on region, handset and carrier, but Nokia says that it expects all WP 8 phones to have Amber before the end of September.
In a blog post over at Nokia Conversations, Editor Ian Delaney explained the features of the update, which is the biggest Windows Phone 8 Lumia devices have received since launch. Among the new additions is the Pro Camera app that debuted recently on the Lumia 1020. This wonderful app will allow users to tweak exposure settings such as shutter speed and ISO for improved low-light performance. The company also claims that improved algorithms will provide better color reproduction, noise reduction, and autofocus. The feature, though, will be limited to users of the Lumia 920, 925 and 928 only.
Also rolling out for all Windows Phone 8 devices, with the exception of the Lumia 520 and recently released 625, is Glance Screen, which features a clock on the lock screen and allows double-tap wake-up and flip to silence for muting incoming calls.
Nokia said that the Amber update would activate the FM radio in all devices with the required hardware on-board, which happens to be all WP 8 handsets bar the Lumia 620.
If you are running Windows Phone 8 then you need to have this update; but, as there is no way of telling when exactly you’ll get it, you’re just going to have to sit tight and wait for the notification!
