Christmas is over and we are entering into a New Year, which for mobile fans, means one thing: new smartphones. The first month of 2013 brings us the year’s biggest electronics event when the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 gets underway on January 8 in Las Vegas. The three day event brings together the world’s biggest tech manufacturer and smartphones usually have top billing.

2012 was a game changing year in terms of technological advancements, a year in which quad-core processors ruled over all, and even Apple bowed to pressure to conform to the growing trend of larger devices. So as we prepare for 2013, here are the top five smartphones to look forward to:

5. LG Optimus G2

We’re going to see no let up in big screen smartphones in 2013, and Korean company LG are expected to launch their offering to the phablet market with the LG Optimus G2. The G2 is expected to come with a 5-inch 1080p display and a giant 2GHz quad-core processor. The device is rumored for a May release and is thought to include Android 5.0 Lime Pie operating system and an 4G LTE radio. Judging by how good the Optimus G is, the thought of the G2 alone is enough to have mobile fans salivating.

4. Sony Xperia Z

Sony is also expected to enter the phablet market in 2013 with the Xperia Z. According to Silicon Angle, the device, which was originally referred to as the Sony Yuga, is said to offer a 5-inch screen with 440ppi, 1.5 GHz Qualcomm S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, and a 13-MP camera. The giant device will most likely ship with Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2.

3. ZTE Grand S

Chinese mobile manufacturer ZTE has already said it will be showing off a new flagship device at CES 2013, and has named that device as the Grand S. Full specs and price of the phone will be revealed at the show in Las Vegas, but we know that the Grand S will feature a 5-inch screen and will be the thinnest phone in its class, at just 6.9mm!

2. HTC M7

2012 marked the 15th birthday of HTC and the company came with what many people regarded as the best smartphone on the market in the One X+, despite this 2012 could be considered somewhat of an annus horribilis for the Taiwanese company as sales slumped considerably. HTC will be looking for an upturn in fortunes, in what is shaping up to become a very competitive market, with the new HTC M7, which will also feature a 5-inch HD display, will probably come with a 1080p resolution, and have a Droid DNA-matching 441 ppi count.

1. Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was by far the best smartphone of 2012. The Korean company’s flagship device has high end specs and top features and has backed up all of the hype with millions of sales. The success of the S3 naturally makes Samsung’s “Get Ready” teaser trailer – which hints at something new coming at CES 2013 – very exciting indeed. While it is not guaranteed, the smart money would be on that something new being the Galaxy S4 as this would undoubtedly draw the most attention. The S4 is expected to feature a 5-inch screen with a bigger processor and better camera than its predecessor and no other phone will be as highly anticipated as this one.

With smartphone technological moving at a mind-boggling pace, 2013 is guaranteed to be the best year yet for mobiles. Happy New Year!
