Tumblr Android Update Brings Much Awaited FeaturesGreat news for all of you regular Android Tumblr users out there – the company has updated its app with a couple of new features, one of which is the highly anticipated animated GIFs.

GIFs are the most popular thing about Tumblr and people just can’t seem to get enough of the short animated images. Now the feature is available for Android, the social networking and micro-blogging service is likely to experience a huge boost in the number of Google Play downloads.

GIFs have been around for years, but have become particularly popular in recent years from people using short clips to share funny and entertaining moments. Tumblr, while it is by no means the only service to support GIFs, has evolved into kind of a spiritual home for these animations; however, while the desktop experience has always been fine, viewing GIFs via an Android phone or tablet has been, well, rather shoddy.

The Tumblr app does make it possible to view GIFs, but has only ever done so on a per post basis, which is inconvenient to say the least. With the update in place, users will be able to enjoy animations directly from their home feed, where they will play automatically for your entertainment.

The GIF auto-playing is the most notable feature on the latest version of the app, but Tumblr also had a couple of other announcements, including the ability to use the app to create Photosets and the long overdue introduction of landscape mode for better viewing on tablets.

Another addition to the changelog is the ability to double-tap on images to zoom in and out – though this feature has rightly been overshadowed by the other announcements.

If you are excited by the thought of auto-playing GIFs, you can download the updated Tumblr app from the Google Play Store now.
