The above steps are to be followed for your WordPress.com account. Once the above steps are completed, you have to import your information to your self-hosted WordPress installation.

If you already have a self-hosted WordPress installation, just log in with your admin username and password.  If you want to install a fresh application of WordPress, you can simply check out the various tutorials on how to install WordPress. Most web hosts offer WordPress already installed, and ready to activate.

Once you log in, select the Tools menu on the left column, and then choose Import.

When you reach the import page, you can see the available sources that you can import content from. Scroll down and choose WordPress as an import type.

In the next step, a popup will appear asking you to install the WordPress Importer plugin. Click on the orange ‘Install Now’ link to continue.

Now the plugin files will be downloaded. Once it is done, select the Activate Plugin & Run Importer link.

You will now be redirected to the actual plugin page.

Click on the Browse button and select the .xml file that you saved on your laptop/computer. Now click on the Upload file and import button.

If the content that you want to transfer is large, you might reach the timeout value of the corresponding web server, before the data is fully copied. If this happens, you’ll have to reupload the .xml file.

There is nothing to worry as the system keeps a record of the transferred content. It will immediately proceed with the remaining data. You’ll have to continue repeating the procedure until you receive confirmation stating that the process has successfully completed.

You’ll now have the option of either picking an existing user as posts author, or you can create a new one for the imported data.

It’s important to note that the Download and Import file attachments need to be checked in the checkbox so that your photos and other attachments can also be transferred.

In the final step, you need to click on the Submit button, and that’s it. You have successfully transferred your data to your self-hosted WordPress application from your WordPress.com account.
