The stage is set for another clash between retail giants thanks to a move made by one of them to entice customers.
Walmart has made public their plans to beta test a new unlimited shipping service for their customers online this summer. And to sweeten the deal, they plan to offer this service for an annual rate of $50.
The retail company will make this offer available to customers by invitation only during this testing period, and those who are invited will have the chance to get select products from among the seven million offered on Walmart’s website in three days or less.
This move is a challenge to Amazon, who currently enjoys their lofty position as a premier global retail company thanks to their Prime shipping service which guarantees that customers get their online orders with standard 2-day shipping that is dependable.
The main sticking point here is the difference in price; Prime is currently offered to subscribers at $99 per year. Walmart plans to observe the beta testing period closely to see the response from their beta testers before moving forward with plans to make this offer more permanent.
