Users of the new BlackBerry 10 have rightly had some grievances of late over the platform’s lack of big name apps; however, there was a large piece of good news for users this Wednesday, as the company announced that popular social networking and instant messaging app WhatsApp is now available in the BlackBerry World store.
In a clear case of better late than never, WhatsApp will be welcomed by almost all BB 10 users, allowing them to send text messages, photos, audio and video free over data.
“BlackBerry has always been about bringing people together in a way that is fast, reliable and impactful,” said, Martyn Mallick, Vice President of Global Alliances and Business Development at BlackBerry in an official press release. “WhatsApp is a leading mobile messaging app that connects people to their contacts on several platforms, and we are pleased to work with WhatsApp to bring their service to our customers.”
“BlackBerry has been a great platform for WhatsApp for many years,” said co-founder of WhatsApp Brian Acton. “Delivering WhatsApp on BlackBerry 10 devices is in line with our goals of ensuring that our customers around the world can continue to communicate with the most important people in their lives.”
According to BlackBerry, the new app will support push notifications and have the ability to send alerts even when the screen is locked. It will also have full integration with BlackBerry Contacts, scanning through names and extracting the ones with WhatsApp installed on their own devices (the app has an estimated 280 million users worldwide) – this will allow you to start messaging friends right away. This is a great feature and will help those unfamiliar with how WhatsApp works get to grips with the app pretty quickly
The application is available to download free from BlackBerry World now for BB 10 and BB 4.6 and higher.
