Stating its commitment to guard users’ online privacy, Yahoo plans to encrypt all communications and information flowing into its data centers around the world.
The commitment was announced on Monday by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, after a recent Washington Post report that the NSA had hacked into Yahoo and Google communication lines, in order to monitor what people were saying and doing online.
Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed that Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, and several other prominent technology companies, have cooperated with the U.S. Government to provide some information about their international users, in accordance with a court-monitored program called PRISM, to combat terrorism. They claimed that it only affected a small number of users, and was only done when legally required.
“I want to reiterate what we have said in the past: Yahoo has never given access to our data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency,” Mayer wrote in a Monday post on Yahoo’s Tumblr blog.
