Yahoo users’ webcams were spied on by a British surveillance agency during the years of 2008-2012, roughly. The GCHQ obtained in excess of 1.8 million users’ private images during 6 months time in 2008, alone.
Supposedly, testing facial recognition technology was the reason for this intrusion of sensitive metadata.
The people spied on using Yahoo were not criminals or under any mandate, so why did this happen? Yahoo calls Optic Nerve, the code name for the program “completely unacceptable”.
